"Solid wood handrails wobble after just half a year? Lignomaster's custom handrails won't budge even if you shake them."

2025 11/27

Even veteran carpenters know the three major complaints about solid wood handrails: they expand so much during the rainy season that they can't be pushed, the gaps in the winter heating season are wide enough to hold a card, and when the joints loosen, they shake more than an old person's cold legs. Last year, the most complaints from owners of newly renovated houses were about the creaking of Wooden Stairs handrails. One villa owner caught a thief in the middle of the night but ended up shaking the Stair Newel Post to pieces first.

Lignomaster's custom solution performs a mortise and tenon magic trick - each section of the handrail is equipped with a "lumbar intervertebral disc": a stainless steel core is inserted into the solid wood, leaving a micrometer-level expansion gap for thermal expansion and contraction. Three years after installation in a villa by the sea in Qingdao, the handrail gaps are still so tight that a business card can't be inserted.

Three protective techniques

1.Steel-inlaid batten technique: Each meter of handrail is hidden with a stainless steel batten, capable of supporting a 300-pound man without shaking.

2.Three-stage wood drying: Slowly baked at 85°C for 21 days, with moisture content controlled at the golden 8% line.

3.Newel Post Cap double-lock system: The column cap is twisted and locked, more secure than the knob of a safe.

The master carpenter's maintenance tips:

① Apply wood protectant oil to the gaps before and after heating each year, which is more effective than hyaluronic acid in preventing wrinkles.

② Place a layer of felt under the Stair Newel Post base during installation for sound insulation comparable to cinema soundproofing cotton.

③ For the crystal Newel Post Cap, use a soft cloth to wipe; steel wool will leave scratches.

The renovation of an old Shanghai villa was truly remarkable - the Wooden Stairs handrail for the curved spiral staircase had to span three floors. Lignomaster directly performed 3D scanning and layout on-site, and the entire handrail was installed with gaps narrower than a human hair. In my opinion, a good handrail should be like old redwood furniture, becoming more lustrous with use, not like those veneered products on the market that reveal their true nature after a rainy season.
